POSITION TITLE: Research Development Officer

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Research Development Officer plays a key role in advancing our organization's research agenda by identifying funding opportunities, developing grant proposals, and cultivating strategic partnerships. This position collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams to support innovative research initiatives and drive sustainable growth. The ideal candidate possesses strong communication skills, a strategic mindset, and a passion for promoting excellence in research.



RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Grant Proposal Development:

  • Research, identify, and evaluate funding opportunities from government agencies, private foundations, commercial partners, and other sources.
  • Develop content high-quality grant proposals that effectively communicate research goals, methodologies, and impact.
  • Collaborate with Principal Investigators and cross functional teams to gather necessary information and ensure alignment with funding guidelines and objectives.

Strategic Planning:

  • Serve as a strategic thought partner, providing insights and recommendations on funding opportunities, grant strategies, and research priorities.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends and developments in basic science research funding and identify strategic opportunities for the institute.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including funding agencies, donors, and partner organizations, to support long-term funding initiatives.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Foster a collaborative environment by engaging with faculty, program managers, and others to gather input and feedback for grant proposals.
  • Work closely with other key stakeholders to ensure alignment of messaging and branding in grant proposals and related materials.
  • Communicate effectively with funders, partners, and other stakeholders to provide updates on grant activities and outcomes.
  • Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., biology, chemistry, neuroscience preferred) with a biomedical focus; PHD preferred. Years of equivalent job experience may be considered in lieu of advanced degree.
    • Minimum of 3 years' experience in grant writing for basic science research, preferably in a non-profit setting, with a proven track record of successful end-to-end grant development, from sourcing to funded grants (federal and non-federal) for both individual and multi-PI/multi-institute proposals.
    • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts into clear, persuasive language.
    • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute strategies to achieve organizational goals, with a desire to continuously improve the status quo.
    • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
    • Passion for basic science research and a commitment to advancing scientific knowledge for the betterment of society.
    • This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus, with flexibility to work 1 day per week remotely from home.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    May include: Stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures.

    COMPENSATON:

    The expected hiring range for this position is $92,920 to $109,158/annually, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
