DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Department of Pharmacology is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers investigate the molecular basis of human diseases. The faculty are internationally renowned for their strength in elucidating basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of signal transduction that lead to innovative drug target identification and ultimately to drug discovery. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines, and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. More than one hundred trainees at the graduate student and postdoctoral level, as well as a staff of more than 50 research technicians and department administrators interact closely with the faculty. This position will serve as scientific and laboratory manager for a lab in the Department of Pharmacology. Under general supervision, the incumbent will engage in innovative complex research projects in collaboration with the PI and research staff, making significant independent and innovative contributions pertaining to inflammatory signaling in endothelial cells and breast cancer. Incumbent will consult with PI on the nature and general plan of approach to basic research problems; read scientific articles pertaining to prosecution of broad research problems related to the area of inflammatory signaling in endothelial research and cancer. Work out all techniques involved in the experimental process including the design, planning, troubleshooting and analysis. This position is afforded significant latitude for complex research projects, decision-making and independent judgment. In consultation with PI, analyze data and contribute content for the preparation of laboratory manuscripts for publication. Incumbent will direct all operational aspects of the laboratory, which is comprised oftechnicians, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and lab assistants. Serve as Work Lead, provide direction, and monitor performance of all lab personnel, and assume full charge of the laboratory and office in PI's absence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of and direct experience with cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or related science acquired through a combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to make innovative contributions pertaining to lab procedures. Demonstrated ability to develop and further the experiments.

  • Demonstrable skill and direct experience in a variety of cellular and molecular biology lab techniques, super-resolution, and confocal imaging.

  • Demonstrated ability to write and publish articles for scientific journals.

  • Demonstrated experience interpreting, troubleshooting, and analyzing results of scientific experiments, especially imaging with validated antibodies.

  • Ability to effectively document complex research procedures, accurately record experimental details and results, perform mathematical calculations necessary for data analysis, prepare graphs and figures to summarize results, and write reports.

  • Ability to prepare, interpret, and present the results of scientific experiments in the pursuit of specific research goals and for the publication of experimental results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

  • Excellent positive interpersonal skills. Ability to work with faculty, students, and staff in a diverse group.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience using Mac and PC computers and scientific software for operating equipment and data analysis including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, MS Word, and GraphPad Prism.

  • Knowledge of and adherence to laboratory safety regulations, requirements, and procedures.

  • Willingness to work with animals including rodents, mice, and rats.

  • Ability to work safely with biohazard materials.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $64,506 - $103,727 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $30.89 - $49.68

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
