DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine (DoM) is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine (SoM) and is responsible for fulfilling its teaching, research, and clinical missions. DoM employees approximately 500 salaried faculty, nearly 200 academic appointees, and more than 300 residents, fellows, and postdocs, supported by almost 1,000 staff members. The Division of Nephrology-Hypertension is a leader in clinical care, research, and the training of future nephrologists. The division offers multiple and diverse research activities which include clinical, translational and basic science research.

Under supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Staff Research Associate will be is responsible for a variety of tasks for basic science research projects. This includes standard molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA protein isolation and quantification, immunoblotting, ELISAs, real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry, and histology. Will also perform tasks related to animal studies such as maintaining a breeding colony, genotyping, microsurgery. Will also provide laboratory support and maintenance such as ordering laboratory supplies, stocking solutions and attending laboratory meetings. Other duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge in molecular biology or biochemistry with related lab experience as typically attained by a Bachelors degree.

  • Experience performing standard molecular biology techniques including, but not limited to DNA/RNA protein isolation and quantitation, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, ELISA, and histology.

  • Ability to perform anesthesia and humane euthanasia on small animals.

  • Knowledge of micro surgery techniques including tissue/organ isolation, injections, and venous cannulations.

  • Experience with maintenance of lab equipment including centrifuges, cryostat, light microscopes, and autoclave.

  • Proficiency with MS office and other data analysis software.

  • Basic chemical knowledge to prepare stocks and run assays.

  • Ability to perform data calculations and simple statistical analysis.

  • Ability to keep organized and accurate lab records and computer files.

  • Knowledge of handling, storing and disposing of non-infectious waste as well as biohazardous material.

  • Must be able to speak, read, and write fluently.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize workload.

  • Experience immunoblotting with LiCor Odyssey system.

  • Experience with in vivo and in vitro animal experiments.

  • Experience with immunofluorescence.

  • Proficiency with Prism or Sigmaplot for figures and statistical analysis.

  • Prior laboratory research experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends.

  • Must be willing to work with small animals.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,548 - $94,190 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.04 - $45.11

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
