POSITION TITLE: Accounting Director


POSITION SUMMARY:

We have an exciting opportunity for an Accounting Director supporting the Department of Finance at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California, home of some of the world's most renowned scientists, including several Nobel laureates. With the development of several lifesaving drugs and vaccines available to the public, recent funding agreements for our Calibr drug discovery division, a robust philanthropy focus on our upcoming centennial campaign, and the completion of our newest research building in the fall, Scripps is growing exponentially and investing in key administration functions. This is a great opportunity for someone who is excited to share great science with the community by being responsible for teaming with finance leadership to develop best practices and efficiencies within the Departments that recently participated in a new ERP implementation.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Effectively manage the operations of the Departments.
  • Preparation and the analysis of policies and procedures.
  • Development and tracking of operating metrics and implementing best practices.
  • Maintaining, updating, and ensuring proper documentation of internal
  • Audit
  • Manage and coordinate tax
  • General ledger account reconciliations and provide review and feedback to staff who prepare
  • Review and approve journal
  • Implementation of new accounting and other business systems [or improvements to existing systems]; creation, review and updates to policies and
  • Provide high-level technical leadership, professional development, and mentorship to department staff, and ensure that accounting processes are performed in an efficient, accurate, appropriate and legal
  • Participate in or lead special projects as needed; and perform other related duties, tasks and responsibilities as required or

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in
  • Requires a minimum of 5 years of directly related cumulative and progressive responsibility and experience, including leading teams or
  • Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS)
  • Experience with internal controls and knowledge of the COSO framework
  • Requires experience successfully managing a team of
  • Requires the ability to effectively manage and comply with all applicable IRS laws.
  • Must be proficient utilizing MS Office, possess a solid working knowledge of various accounting software systems and have advanced excel
  • Requires advanced analytical and reporting
  • Ability to work with competing and shifting priorities in a matrix
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Must be highly organized and able to manage multiple critical projects with various
  • Comfortable working in a de-centralized structure, gaining broad support for initiatives, and making progress when formal guidance may not

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

May include: Stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures.

COMPENSATION:

The expected hiring range for this position is $174,177 to $216,495/annually, commensurate with experience.
