DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Department of Pharmacology is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers investigate the effects of chemical interventions on biological systems. The faculty are internationally renowned for their strength in elucidating basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of signal transduction that lead to innovative drug target identification and ultimately to cutting edge drug discovery. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines, and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. More than one hundred trainees at the graduate student and postdoctoral level, as well as a staff of more than 50 research technicians and department administrators interact closely with the faculty. The diverse mix of ages, backgrounds, and talents creates a robust work environment with challenging career opportunities and a commitment to continued growth potential. We constantly seek to recruit highly motivated, technologically-advanced and interested individuals to become a part of our dynamic exploratory research and educational environment. In consultation with the Principal Investigator, the incumbent will perform a variety of experimental procedures for ongoing laboratory research projects to study bacterial pathogenesis, host responses to infection, and the human microbiome. The incumbent will develop and apply multiplexing quantitative proteomics tools to track thousands of protein dynamics and associated post-translational modifications. Will then interface microbiology techniques to characterize important factors identified during these interactions. Research will utilize microbiology, cloning, and mass spectrometry procedures and maintain all data analysis using the associated software. Independently investigate techniques that may not be standard for the lab, and adapt them for use in the lab, write protocols, and train other staff personnel and students in their use. Independently recognize problems and identify solutions, contribute original ideas, analyze data and present findings in meetings and complete written reports. Incumbent will also assist the PI with laboratory management to include; EH&S compliance, maintenance of key laboratory equipment/machines, and ordering supplies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry, cloning, and computer science as typically attained by a Bachelor's degree, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Proven ability to contribute to original project development ideas, experimental design, and strategies, as well as their implementation into a variety of research projects.

  • Knowledge of microbiology techniques and procedures in reference to working with various chemicals including acid, and bacteria, especially pathogenic strains, including liquid-liquid extractions, culturing, and genetic manipulation. Ability to prepare and maintain media buffers and mathematical skills to perform molar calculations.
