DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, incumbent will manage a radiology research laboratory that images animals using different types of imaging scanners. Duties will include animal handling, anesthesia, injection of contrast agents and radiotracers, and anesthesia maintenance & recovery. The incumbent will manage the day-to-day operations of the lab, schedule shared resource equipment, and order & maintain the supplies and chemicals. The incumbent will instruct postdoctoral scholars, graduate students and other staff members various aspects of the research program including the use of animals, develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the orderly function of the laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge in biology, biomedical sciences or a related field generally acquired through a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of anatomy is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in animal care, handling, and restraining in dogs, pigs, rabbits, rats, mice, etc.

  • Demonstrated experience to administer drugs and collect blood and tissue. Proven skill in observing animals for health and anesthesia. Proven familiarity of electronic equipment for physiologic recording. Proven skill in surgical preparation. Demonstrated experience in venipuncture.

  • Superb organization and recordkeeping (animal health, surgical records, data, etc.) skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of sterile techniques for cell culture. General analytical chemistry skill (mixing chemicals and reagents, balancing equations, etc.) Use of basic laboratory equipment (pH meters, microscopes, balances, pipettes, centrifuges, etc).

  • Excellent written skills and knowledge of English language, including grammar, usage, spelling, and punctuation. Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills. Demonstrated skill to communicate clearly, effectively, tactfully, and patiently in person, on the telephone, and in writing to a diverse group of people in the academic and scientific communities. Ability to present a positive impression in person, on the telephone, and through written correspondence.

  • Demonstrated skill in use of PC and computer software. Ease with database, spreadsheets and word processing. Familiarity with UCSD systems preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to read, understand, and extract information from published medical, chemical, and biological literature to prepare background information for scientific papers, abstracts, and grant proposals.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of matters related to work.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimum supervision, and to work closely and collaboratively with others including the ability to follow written and oral instructions.

  • Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to identify problems and develop innovative solutions.

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills as well as demonstrated skill in prioritizing multiple responsibilities and tasks.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with the handling of mice, rats, and rabbits; performing minor terminal surgery

  • Performing rat and mouse tail vein injections

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Must be willing to work with animals.

  • Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.

  • Must be willing to work with radioactivity

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,548 - $94,190 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.04 - $45.11

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
