Essential Job Duties

North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine (NCSU-CVM), Department of Population Health and Pathobiology, offers a unique opportunity for post-Veterinary professional development: a Combined Residency and Master in Science (MS) in Poultry Health and Welfare. Completion of this program satisfies the requirements to either take the certifying examination of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians or American College of Animal Welfare.

This program offers hands-on clinical experience in the identification and control of factors affecting poultry health, production, and welfare. The combined poultry residency uses resources at NCSU-CVM, NCSU Prestage Department of Poultry Science and Cooperative Extension Service, NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, integrated poultry production companies, and allied poultry industries. In addition, our Teaching Animal Unit provides on-site production and assessment experiences by monitoring and overseeing turkey and broiler flock production, health, and welfare. Residents will directly participate in:

  • Commercial and non-commercial flock visits
  • Field investigations and research related to current poultry health, welfare, and disease prevention issues.
  • Application and interpretation of laboratory diagnostic tests (pathology, serology, microbiology, molecular biology)
  • In field assessments and audits of poultry systems in compliance with niche market and industry standard guidelines.
  • Application of epidemiological strategies to evaluate disease processes in poultry populations,
  • Involvement in teaching activities and development of curriculum and resources
  • Preparation and participation in professional presentations and publications.

The program uses resources at NCSU, CVM, NCSU State Poultry Science Department and Cooperative Extension Service, NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, integrated poultry production companies, and allied poultry industries.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., occasional after-hours work

Department Required Skills

House Officers will contribute to the clinical services activities of the Poultry Health program through involvement with clients, diagnostic investigations and problem solving, development of health recommendations, clinical research studies, and interaction with various diagnostic laboratories. Publication of case reports and/or clinical studies are necessary to meet the credentialing requirements for the American College of Poultry Veterinarians.

In addition to clinical teaching and service activities with the Poultry Health faculty, each House Officer will also spend time working with adjunct faculty at commercial broiler, turkey, and table egg production facilities. Additional field experience may be provided through the North Carolina Department of Agriculture Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratories, United States Department of Agriculture, and NCSU Poultry Extension Service.

Eligible for North Carolina Veterinary Licensure and/or faculty certificate under the supervisor of the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Health Complex.
