This scientist will keep abreast of current literature and drive innovative approaches to address mechanism of action, potential new indications, patient subpopulations, exploratory biomarkers and possible drug combinations. The position will involve close collaboration and study coordination with other Research teams including Antibody Engineering, Protein Biochemistry, Preclinical Pharmacology, Bioinformatics, Bioanalytical and Biomarkers, and other core drug discovery groups. The position is primarily bench focused (80%) and collaborative in nature. The successful candidate is expected to drive the publication of data in high quality scientific, technical or medical journals, to represent the department and programs at external meetings, to be a key representative to our collaborators, and to promote collaborative efforts within and outside of Alexion.

Substantial expertise in any of the following is highly desirable: complement biology, rare disease, biomarker discovery, in vitro and in vivo assay systems.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Developing and employing novel approaches to differentiate Alexion molecules from the competitive landscape

  • Developing hypotheses testable within Alexion clinical trials to better understand the mechanism of efficacy and potential patient sub-populations with greater benefit

  • Developing and employing novel approaches to identify, profile and quantify biomarkers in clinical samples across multiple therapeutic areas of unmet medical need, including neurology, nephrology, hematology and metabolic diseases

  • Play a key role in an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, clinical pharmacologists, data scientists and researchers, collaborating to develop a personalized medicine approach for rare disease

  • Participate in alliances with CRO’s, industry and academic partners

  • Prioritize tasks and coordinate efforts to deliver results under aggressive timelines

  • Keep meticulous records

  • Clearly, concisely communicate concepts, results and conclusions internally and externally

  • Remain current on new advances and methodologies in biomarker discovery and therapeutic areas, as well as the competitive landscape

  • Foster a collaborative, patient-centric culture

  • Ph.D. with postdoctoral experience and 0-2 years of relevant industrial experience

  • Expertise in cell biology and in vitro assay techniques such as flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, ELISA, WES, sequencing, RT-PCR, proteomic technologies, with the aim of developing assays to assess mechanism of action and candidate novel biomarkers for Alexion portfolio programs

  • Solid understanding of complement biology is highly desirable

  • A good understanding of the drug development process from lead identification through clinical trials is desirable

  • Ability to formulate testable hypotheses, design experiments, analyze data, draw conclusions and plan next steps

  • Ability to contribute to multiple projects and prioritize tasks accordingly

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, capacity to multi-task and the ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment are essential
