Description

JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

The candidate will help design and conduct research in biomedical natural language processing while receiving advanced training from Dr. Abeed Sarker to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The research project that the postdoc is expected work on lies at the intersection of natural language processing, social media mining and health domain specific topics such as drug abuse. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to design and evaluate NLP experiments, program reusable applications using python. The postdoctoral researcher should also be able to develop new ideas that promote current research, prepare and publish scientific manuscripts under the direction of Dr. Abeed Sarker.

 

The Emory University Department of Biomedical Informatics is recruiting for a post doctorate in the area of natural language processing, machine learning and social media mining. Working in a large team of 15 PhD students several postdocs and research professors, this represents an opportunity to advance an academic career with strong mentorship and collaboration across schools and units.

 

Candidates are required to have good background in at least one of the following areas: Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.

The Department of Biomedical Informatics is a highly dynamic and multidisciplinary environment that has strengths in bioinformatics, global health informatics, imaging informatics, machine learning, , mHealth informatics and signal processing.

Strong programming skills in Python is essential; Experience with computing in cloud environments is a strong plus; some experience with high performance computing and database administration is desired but not required.
