ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position in precision radial velocity measurement for exoplanet detection at the University of Wyoming in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The successful candidate will work with the FHiRE (Fiber-fed High Resolution Echelle) instrument being built for the 2.3-m Wyoming InfraRed Observatory (WIRO).
The FHiRE team is led by Profs. Hannah Jang-Condell, Michael Pierce and Chip Kobulnicky. Commissioning of FHiRE is expected to be take place in mid-2019, and will be used to follow up on candidate exoplanets identified by TESS. We expect 150 nights/year to be available for precision radial velocity observations of exoplanet targets.
In addition to WIRO, resources available at the University of Wyoming include the Red Buttes Observatory (RBO, 0.6-m) and the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputer Center. The University of Wyoming is also a partner in the Apache Point Observatory.
Duties will include development of a data processing pipeline, reduction and analysis of RV data, and coordination of observing campaigns. The initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year.
Postdoctoral Associates are temporary Academic Professionals dedicated to the pursuit of greater professional expertise after the attainment of the doctoral degree. This category recognizes that doctoral recipients in some disciplines may require intensive advanced work in a particular discipline before seeking permanent employment. Postdoctoral Associates are not eligible for extended-term appointments. It is characteristic of Postdoctoral Associates to work with a small set of faculty mentors who are responsible for directing the employee’s research and training. The temporary nature of internships, the precariousness of grant funding, and the desire of many Postdoctoral Associates to acquire permanent employment early in their careers call for a specific set of governing regulations for this category of employee.
PhD in Astronomy.
Experience in precision radial velocity observations of exoplanets.
Experience in reduction and analysis of RV data.
Experience in coordinating observing campaigns.
