POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, AFRICA ID AND PAYMENTS INITIATIVEAbdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), to conduct research involving J-PAL's Africa ID, Payments, and Governance Initiative being carried out in collaboration with University of Cape Town and with funding from the Gates Foundation. The initiative consists of a research fund to study innovative government payment systems and reforms. The work will cover a range of interventions, including migrating cash-based G2P payments into digital channels, using ID technologies to eliminate ghosts from government payrolls and social programs, migrating price subsidies for commodity subsidies into direct benefit transfer payments, and using payments and ID systems to broaden the tax base in a progressive manner. Will be responsible for delineating the research agenda and writing a white paper and working with stakeholders across the continent to develop new projects and supporting local researcher capacity building efforts. 

The position offers an opportunity to join a research partnership with a strong track record of high-quality publication and policy impact, is likely to lead to several co-authored papers, and is designed to help launch a successful academic career with a strong research pipeline. 

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: a doctoral degree in economics, political science, education, computer science, or related field; experience and a strong background in either implementing RCTs on their own and/or demonstrated research interest in one or several of the subject areas noted above; and proficiency with Stata or R. Python, C, MATLAB or other programming skills a plus. Job #17194
