Postdoctoral - Microbes, Biofilms and C. Elegans
Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York

Date Posted February 26, 2019

Employment Type Full-time
Application Deadline Open until filled

The Mani Laboratory @The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, INC has an open position for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to be part of an expanding research program on novel aspects of the microbial biofilms and C. elegans inflammation and aging. This position is being filled in conjunction with The Nudler Laboratory at NYU and will benefit significantly from the collaboration of both laboratories.

Laboratory Research Focus and Expertise: The laboratory is focused on the study of orphan nuclear receptors, specifically the Pregnane X Receptor (PXR), that recognize xenobiotics (and endobiotics) as ligands and their effects on mammalian physiology and pathophysiology. Recently, we have shown that microbial metabolites can serve as ligands for such receptors (Immunity, 2014). In more recent work, in the study of these microbial ligands, we devised a biofilm assay that allowed for identification of new and novel bacterial species/strains from the enteric microbiota. The goal now is to study all aspects of the importance of these species to host physiology and pathophysiology (inflammation, cancer). These studies will include delving into the mechanisms of host-microbe (and microbe-host) interactions using C. elegans as a model organism. Related research can expand to study of the mechanisms of bacterial biofilms using both genetic, biochemical and biophysical approaches.

Postdoctoral Expertise Required:

1. Recent doctoral degree or equivalent (e.g., M.D or M.D./Ph.D or Ph.D) and/or early

postdoctoral training exposure.

2. First author publication record from Ph.D

3. Experience in C. elegans and biochemistry research.

4. Strong reasoning, communication, visualization and written skills (English) are preferred
