The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics at the University of Virginia invites applicants to apply for the position of Research Associate. Duties include: design and performance of experiments exploring the basic processes of cell proliferation, gene expression or cancer progression. Experiments require a working knowledge of techniques commonly used in molecular biology and cell biology.
Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.
The selected candidate will have additional responsibilities of meeting weekly with the Principal Investigator to discuss experimental results, conduct literature searches, present results in weekly lab meetings and at conferences as well as in interdepartmental seminars.
The candidate must work independently and ethically, document all research data appropriately, assist graduate students in the lab, apply for independent funding where applicable, and publish data in qualified journals.
Education: The completion of a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree in Biochemistry or a related field is required by the appointment start date.
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
