Are you a highly motivated research professional seeking an exciting opportunity for to contribute to a high impact project involving HIV prevention?

Are you interested in collaborating to develop a novel biomedical device for long-acting prevention of HIV infection? 

If so, you may be the Postdoctoral Scientist that the Discovery-Science-Technology Unit is looking to add to our already successful Engineered Systems team.  In this role, you will lead the design and development of a long-acting biomedical device for sustained release of a target antiretroviral drug. 

Principal responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Antiretroviral drug formulation

  • Design and fabrication of prototype biomedical device

  • Evaluation of the kinetics of drug release

  • Supporting efforts in pre-clinical studies.

In this role, you will gain valuable research experience in the field of biomedical devices, collaborating closely with other RTI scientists on new and existing programs, presenting results to RTI staff, collaborators and the general scientific community via potential research publication authorships and proceedings. All operations of the laboratory will be conducted in accordance with RTI’s laboratory safety guidelines.

This position is based at RTI’s main campus in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.


  • A PhD in biomedical engineering, biochemistry, material science, or related field.

  • Demonstrated, in-depth knowledge of biomedical devices such as transport kinetics, biocompatibility, device fabrication, drug formulations, or dissolution methodologies(Experience in mechnical properties and testing of polymers is a plus).

  • Highly interactive interpersonal skills for effective communication with project team members, various staff (including engineers, scientists, technicians, clients, vendors, etc), and the scientific community;

  • Desire for flexibility to expand or develop new research and product development initiatives; 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, and the ability to create and successfully implement experimental test plans;

  • Creative ability to solve problems that arise without compromising data quality; 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
