Postdoctoral Research Associate -- Psychology (Revised)

Job Summary

This is a multi-year, grant funded position, by the National Science Foundation (NSF) project entitled, Excellence in Research: Navigating the Double Bind: Assessing the Development and Contribution of Identity Shifting to the Recruitment & Retention of Black Women in STEM Education. This position is responsible for conducting research and analysis, manuscript writing, presenting research findings, and assisting faculty with research projects exploring identify formation among Black women in STEM education from a psychological perspective.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Collects, processes and analyzes quantitative and qualitative (surveys, experiments, and interview data) 
• Assists faculty researchers and other collaborators both at Spelman and externally, or may act independently, in planning and designing research studies, such as surveys or experimental designs.
• Presents project results to internal and external parties. 
• Performs advanced statistical analyses, including selecting the appropriate analysis procedure, setting up data for analysis, and producing written reports on the results of the analyses.
• Supervises and trains undergraduate research assistants.
• Presents research findings at professional conferences. 
• Searches pertinent scientific literature, as needed.
• Assists with ordering and procurement of equipment and with general maintenance of the lab.
• Performs the research required by the faculty supervisor to a high standard and in accordance with all institutional and federal regulations.
• Works in a collegial and cooperative manner with the faculty supervisor and other co-workers.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. required, preferably in social psychology, education, or a related field, with research focus on Black women’s experiences in STEM education. Must have 1-3 years of prior experience collecting, organizing, analyzing and disseminating data. This position requires a strong interest in and familiarity with research in racial and gender diversity in STEM, prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination.

Must have prior experience in managing a research lab and undergraduate research assistants.

Excellent written and verbal communication, problem-solving, time management, and supervisory skills are essential, as is the ability to work both independently and within a team. The incumbent must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, and technical procedures. Additionally, this incumbent must have the ability to effectively deliver oral presentations and the ability to provide information and respond to questions from others in the Spelman community, or external contacts, if necessary.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have advanced skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) which includes such things as creating forms, using formulas, and be very internet savvy. Must possess experience using analyzing data sets (Excel, SPSS, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with (or training in) scale development and validation preferred but not required.
