Postdoctoral Fellow
Job Description
The Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is a leading research institution in the fields of computational and systems biology, with a focus on issues of human health. The ISB is looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow to take part in a multiyear, National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded effort as a Cancer Systems Biology Consortium (CSBC) center. The consortium is using transformative technologies and computational approaches to develop a comprehensive view of cancer.
The CSBC center comprises research groups at the ISB (Thorsson , Wei , Heath ) and at UCLA and Yale Universities, representing a wide variety of expertise that spans computational biology, mathematical modeling of intracellular and extracellular networks, advanced spatial multi-omics technologies, immuno-oncology, and development of clinical cancer therapeutics. The center aims to understand how the spatio-temporal context of gene regulation and networks of the tumor microenvironment can relate to improving combination-targeted therapy with immunotherapy. The position is shared between the Shmulevich and Wei labs at ISB. Related projects in these labs that play a key role are the CRI iAtlas interactive portal for immuno-oncology research (cri-iatlas.org ), the ISB Cancer Gateway in the Cloud (isb-cgc.org ), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) initiatives, the Human Tumor Atlas Network (humantumoratlas.org ), the Imaging Data Commons (imaging.datacommons.cancer.gov ), the Physical Sciences in Oncology Network (physics.cancer.gov ), and the Innovative Molecular Analysis Technologies program (imat.cancer.gov ).
We are looking for someone with a high-level of self-motivation and a strong work ethic. Excellent analytical, programming, and communication skills are essential — as is careful attention to detail. This position will provide an excellent opportunity to work and train as part of a highly motivated interdisciplinary team in the rapidly developing areas of cancer genomics, biomolecular imaging and precision cancer care.
The work will include:
- Working in close collaboration with computational and experimental biologists on setting goals and research directions
- Identifying key features of the tumor-immune microenvironment through integration and pattern identification in spatio-temporal multi-omic data.
- Participating in building and refining a predictive multiscale agent-based model to map the evolution of the tumor-immune microenvironment associated with therapy responses
- Authoring and presenting research methods and findings at meetings, workshops and in publications
Required education, skills, and experience:
- PhD in Genetics, Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Engineering or related disciplines
- Strong analytical, programming, and communication skills
- Experience with common bioinformatics methods, tools, and data resources, e.g.:
- high-throughput data processing tools and techniques
- exploratory data analysis, statistical analysis and visualization
- genome sequence analysis, retrieving, manipulating and managing data from public data repositories such as GDC, TCGA, ENCODE, NCBI and Ensembl
Highly desirable skills and experience:
- Mathematical modeling of biological networks at subcellular and intracellular scales
- Solid knowledge and past research experience in cancer biology and immuno-oncology
Interested applicants should submit their curriculum vitae and a brief statement summarizing their relevant experience, personal goals, and reasons for interest in the position through the online application portal. All documents can be uploaded on the first page of the application along with the CV.
Pay Range:
ISB pays postdoctoral fellows on a scale based upon experience: $65,478 – $91,711 annually.

Exceptional candidates for this position may be nominated for the Lee Hood Systems Fellowship (https://isbscience.org/careers/postdocs/hood-fellows/ ) with an annual stipend of $95,000 over 2-3 years. These nominations are presented by the supporting Faculty member to the entire Faculty for approval. The postdoc candidate will be invited to submit additional information if they are nominated.
About the Institute for Systems Biology (https://isbscience.org )
ISB is a collaborative and cross-disciplinary non-profit biomedical research institute based in Seattle WA, and focuses on some of the most pressing issues in human health, including brain health, cancer, sepsis, and aging, as well as many chronic and infectious diseases. ISB currently hosts 15 research groups with expertise ranging across genetics, microbial genetics, complex molecular machines, macromolecular complexes, gene regulatory networks, immunology, molecular and cell biology, cancer biology, genomics, proteomics, protein chemistry, computational biology, and biotechnology. Unlike traditional academic departments, our faculty are cross-disciplinary and work collaboratively toward a common vision. This cross-disciplinary approach enables us to take on big, complex problems.
ISB was created by genomics pioneer Dr. Leroy Hood in 2000 as the first-of-its-kind institute dedicated to systems biology. ISB is in the top ranks of scientific institutions worldwide. In 2012, the SCImago ranked ISB 4th worldwide on its Excellence Rate scale. ISB strives for a culture of academic excellence and champions sound scientific research that has real-world translational impact. ISB faculty members have launched several successful companies, including: Cytopeia (acquired by BD in 2008), Integrated Diagnostics, Macrogenics, NanoString Technologies, PACT Pharma, Isoplexis, Sofie Biosciences, and Accelerator Corporation. ISB is an affiliate of Providence St. Joseph Health, one of the largest not-for-profit health care systems in the United States.
ISB is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, age, protected veteran or disabled status, or genetic information.
