DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling its teaching, research, and clinical missions. Department employees approximately 500 salaried faculty, nearly 200 academic appointees, and more than 300 residents, fellows, and postdocs, supported by almost 1,000 staff members. The Business Services Office interfaces with and supports financial, operational, and programs throughout the department and works in conjunction with the School of Medicine, General Campus, Clinical Practice Organization, and Health System.

Under supervision, the incumbent will assist with performing a wide variety of standard procedures related to molecular biology and RNA sequencing making technical determinations and/or observations related to research projects. Perform basic laboratory activities. Assist with basic laboratory maintenance. Other duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge in an appropriated field of science or technology or equivalent in education and experience.

  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, including the following: recombinant DNA cloning, DNA and RNA purification, RT-PCR, PCR, protein purification, immunoprecipitation, electrophoresis, Western blotting. Ability to calculate and prepare solutions and dilutions.

  • Knowledge of personal computers and software to include experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe CS (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat).

  • Ability to work independently to effectively prioritize tasks and work with a large number of samples with accuracy and efficiency.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effective deal with a diverse workforce.

  • Excellent communication skills for oral presentations, written reports, and one-on-one laboratory training.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, establishing and maintaining good working relationships with P.I., supervisor, postdoctoral scholars, and other members of the research group.

  • Ability to take direction, be detail-oriented and follow step-wise instruction.

  • Knowledge of general laboratory housekeeping procedures including maintaining inventory and equipment, ordering supplies, preparing solutions, maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment.

  • Experience in library preparation for Illumina Next Generation sequencing, including the techniques ChIP-seq, RNA-seq. Ability to quantitate libraries with accuracy using quantitative PCR and fluorometry.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in aseptic tissue culture technique. Demonstrated ability to maintain, pass, transfect, treat and preserve mammalian cell lines under sterile conditions. Understanding of cell growth and differentiation, media requirements, and contamination issues.

  • Knowledge of EH&S regulations and requirements for laboratory safety, including methods for handling, cleaning and disposal of waste.

  • Knowledge of Animal Subjects Program regulations and ethical treatment of animals.

  • Experience working with DNA and RNA viruses.

  • Knowledge of and experience with UCSD purchasing procedures and IFIS.

  • Knowledge of light and fluorescent microscopy and familiarity with image analysis.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 - $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 - $30.72

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
