POSITION TITLE: Senior Director, Office of Technology & Corporate Development


POSITION SUMMARY:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Director of Technology Transfer and Corporate Development in our Office of Technology Development. This individual is an integral part of our senior leadership team at Scripps Research and will be expected to generate material and present to the Scripps Research Board of Directors regarding all activities within the Technology Development department and their impact across the organization. They will be enabled to continue the development of best-in-class management reporting and operational activities, including the effective integration of such activities within the Scripps Research ERP and external reporting tools (e.g., iEdison). The successful candidate will have a proven track record of driving financial results and is known as a dynamic, operational leader and change enabler. Will be responsible for all short and long-term financial forecasting of OTD revenue and ensuring compliance of existing Scripps Research partners.



RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Oversee the Institute's Technology Transfer Office and providing efficient and strategic management of the Institute's intellectual property portfolio and the commercialization thereof, including decision making regarding the portfolio, leading negotiations, and management of existing relationships.
  • Develop and execute strategies to identify and establish broad research and IP generating relationships with institutional partners, including Pharma companies and Foundations, to expand and fund individual labs or groups of labs at the Scripps Research Institute.
  • Negotiate and establish partnerships and collaborations to drive technology to market, including License or Option Agreements, Research Collaboration Agreements, MTAs, DUAs, NDAs, Royalty/Revenue Sharing Agreements and Inter-Institutional Agreements.
    • Develop strategies and implement new initiatives to facilitate alternative commercialization strategies including fostering entrepreneurship through the creation of Scripps backed "spin-off" companies.

    • Work closely with the Institute's legal and finance teams to ensure that all partnerships and collaborations are structured to meet legal and financial requirements and that investigators are able to effectively manage and mitigate potential conflicts while maximizing the return to Scripps Research.

    • Manage and analyze the Institute's patent estate, making strategic market-based decisions regarding patent prosecution, in collaboration with the Office of Patent Counsel.

    • Keep abreast of industry trends, funding and market opportunities, and other developments related to technology transfer and corporate development in the biotech industry and other related industries (e.g., clean tech, energy).

    • Provide guidance and decision support regarding activities commenced at Calibr, the drug discovery and development arm of Scripps Research, including its existing pipeline assets and ongoing advanced research and development at Calibr.

    • Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in a life science discipline strongly preferred.
    • 10+ years of experience in licensing or business development in the biotech industry, including experience in developing and negotiating complex collaboration agreements, academic technology transaction experience is a plus.
    • Familiarity with cloud-based systems for data management and compliance functions regarding Scripps Research agreements and technologies is required; experience with Inteum (minuet) is a major plus.
    • Highly organized and able to manage multiple critical projects with various deadlines.
    • Comfortable working in a de-centralized structure, gaining broad support for initiatives, and making progress when formal guidance may not exist.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    May include: stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures.

    COMPENSATON:

    The expected hiring range for this position is $210,000 to $230,000/annually, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
